Great beach any time of year - very open and lots of long walks plus Twentyman's Ice Cream shop makes this special. Kite flying, kite surfing and anything requiring wind is a speciality here - great for dog walks and kids though

This is a rather inviting photo of an otherwise run down coastal town! However there is a rather good Roman Museum right next to a Roman fort site. I recommend the guided tour - really informative if you like local history. Otherwise on a dull or wet day with kids the Clip and Climb centre is a great option followed by the best fish and chips on the harbour...

Marine RoadThis is a rather inviting photo of an otherwise run down coastal town! However there is a rather good Roman Museum right next to a Roman fort site. I recommend the guided tour - really informative if you like local history. Otherwise on a dull or wet day with kids the Clip and Climb centre is a great option followed by the best fish and chips on the harbour...
More history - not many people know this but Edward Long Shanks died here many centuries ago! Marsh fever... a few good pubs and coastal walks around too.

My real favourite day out - a trip via Ravenglass to the Fort. Totally untouristed. Unspoilt. Carry on after exploring the Fort and drive the passes on a circular tour - full day but for me not to be missed.

Carlisle Castle
Castle WayJohn Peel - not the DJ - is buried here. Lovely village. Great drive to get there. Whilst there visit the craft centre and the Old Mill eatery - then walk along the river to the old ruined bobbin factory. Another off the beaten track day out. Afterwards make your way to Hesket Newmarket and visit the locally owned pub with local brewed beers ... watch out for sheep on the road as you drive back over the fell

I love it here. You can visit the start of the Roman Wall and incorporate a walk. You can learn about the half netting fishing practices and eat freshly caught fish in the local pub. It's just an interesting place to visit

The nearest excavated fully tourist friendly fort on the Roman Wall. You can do Birdoswald and Vindolanda in a a day

Famously featured in the movie "Robin Hood King of Thieves" ... our kids loved this bit of interesting trivia but also a great walk along the wall that is reasonably accessible. The road between Once Brewed and Chollerford has some lovely bumbs but watch your exhaust!

A fabulous place to go Ape! Whinlatter is only 20 minutes from drive from your accommodation. Magical and very exciting... good for all ages I think. Great walks nearby and restaurants. Or stop off in one of the many Cockermouth eateries or pubs on the way home...
