Neighborhoods

The major city on Aquidneck Island is Newport, but the rest of the island should not be ignored. The area around Middletown has not changed much in appearance from the earliest years of settlement. The south end of Middletown is a more rugged and dramatic landscape, represented by an area of outcropping conglomerate rocks with bold rock faces and a series of parallel ridges. Along the south coast, the Atlantic shoreline offers dramatic contrasts ranging from a rugged and rocky coast culminating at Easton’s Point and Sachuest Point, to flat expanses of sandy beach at Easton’s “First” Beach, Sachuest “Second” Beach, and Peabody “Third” Beach. Part of Sachuest and the nearby Paradise Hills are still in a natural state and are set aside as wildlife sanctuaries. That’s where we are.

Beach

We are luck to live within a few miles of some of the best beaches on the island. Local Tip: If you are visiting during the summer you might want to consider walking or biking to them as parking there is expensive and limited and you might end up stuck in traffic for a long time.
Sachuest Beach (aka Second Beach): 10-12 min walking distance, is considered the island’s official surfer beach. It is a south facing, mile long, family friendly beach with good surf and great sand. Surfboard rentals and lessons are available during the season. Local Tip: On good waves days watch surfers from the rocks on Surfer’s End (on the west end). Food: Del’s Lemonade, Surf Shack and Diegos Food Truck are usually parked at Surfer’s End during the summer season. Between Tower 5 and 6 you can also find The Snack Bar, famous for its twin lobsters rolls.

Peabody Beach (aka Third beach): 10 min bike ride is a beautiful, family friendly East facing beach. Third Beach has less waves and usually it is less windy. It overlooks Third Beach Harbor located near the mouth of the Sakonnet River and summer parking is for locals only. Definitely the best beach for families with small kids. Pro Tip: From Memorial through Labor Day the parking lot is for residents only but you can find parking available at Peabody's Beach which is on the opposite end of the public parking.

Easton Beach (aka First Beach): 5-7 min walking distance, is one of Newport’s largest beaches. Located on Memorial Boulevard at the start of the city's famed Cliff Walk, Easton's Beach occupies a 3/4 mile long stretch of sand with board walk and Atlantic facing surf. Food: Easton Beach Snack Bar is located on this beach and, according to our opinion, they serve the best lobster rolls. https://www.eastonsbeach.com/

Bottega Bocconi: 5 min walk – Italian Deli, being Italian myself, I love this little bottega. They sell the most delicious Italian meats including prosciutto cotto and crudo, olives and cheese. They also serve coffee and make authentic Italian “piadina” (sandwiches).

The Breakers is the grandest of Newport's summer "cottages" and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family's social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America. You will be mind-blown by the opulence of this house.
