Bass Point Reserve is located just south of Shellharbour Village This significant headland features one of the few diverse littoral rainforests in the Illawarra Region, a large collection of significant Aboriginal and European heritage sites and extensive marine habitats. The reserve is open 7 days a week from 6.30am to 8.00pm throughout the year. Closed during a total fire ban. Take a walk through the reserve and enjoy natural flora and fauna. The lookouts at Bushrangers Bay and Maloneys Bay take advantage of the coastal views, follow the Coastal Heritage Walk signs and learn more about the history and heritage of the site to the Aboriginal people. In the past the Wodi Wodi tribe had a "walkabout area" between Picton, Stanwell Tops, Marulan and Nowra and would camp at Bass Point. Today Bass Point is entered on the Register of the Australian Heritage Commission and is recognised as one of the two most important archaeological sites on the NSW coast. The Cities Service Boston Memorial at Bass Point remembers the Australian Soldiers who lost their lives going to the aid of sailors on the American Merchant Ship City Services Boston that ran into the rocks at Bass Point during a storm in May 1943. Bushrangers Bay is a very popular diving and snorkelling location on the South Coast. The sheltered bay offers vast marine life some of which are rare in this area of the coast.

MINNAMURRA RAIN FOREST EASY WALK: Take the 1.6-km Minnamurra Rainforest Loop Walk of elevated walkways and paved tracks which link to suspension bridges across the Minnamurra Rivulet. The first 500 metres of this walk provides for assisted wheelchair access – so it would also be suitable for a buggy. Otherwise, if you have a bub, a carrier would be perfect. It would take between 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete this walk. MODERATE WALK: Halfway around the Minnamurra Rainforest Loop Walk, you can also deviate up the paved Falls Walk (2.6km return). If you’re a family with school kids, then this slightly more challenging walk will offer you the reward of spectacular views over the rainforest canopy and the gorge carved by the Minnamurra Rivulet. The Falls Walk concludes with a viewing platform and rest area at the base of the Upper Falls. Allow up to 1.5 hours to 2 hours to complete this walk. REST & RELAX: For a more relaxed visit at Minnamurra Rainforest, pack a picnic rug, bring some lunch and utilise one of the many picnic areas around the National Park to just spend some quality relaxing time with the family. EXPLORE: A walk around the park reveals its many uses over the years. Spot remaining cedar trees, so prized by foresters in the 1800s. Head downstream from the Minnamurra Rainforest to see the 1853 Kelly’s Cottage and its camellia tree, believed to be one of the southern hemisphere’s oldest. The land’s rich soil and water supply make it ideal for dairy farming – and you can still see the monument to Australia’s first butter factory in nearby Jamberoo Valley.

For a varied and interesting walk, take the Clover Hill trail. This old logging route leads to Rainbow Falls and three smaller falls upstream on the Macquarie Rivulet. After walking in the dense shade of the forest, suddenly the landscape opens up at Clover Hill – these are the paddocks cleared by farmers over a century ago. High above, the massive cliffs of the escarpment glow yellow and orange in the sunlight. Bushwalkers, birdwatchers and adventurers will love this walk, with its sharp contrast between rainforest and open fields. The huge rainforest trees, eucalypts, beefwood, Illawarra flame trees, cabbage tree palms and tree ferns, home to lyrebirds and goannas, give way to sunny plains where you will often see kangaroos hopping about. Highlights include a spectacular view of the escarpment, and adventurers may wish to scramble upstream at the end of the track to access Rainbow Falls.

One of Australia’s most scenic coastlines is yours to explore. Ocean views, sea caves, rock pools, spectacular rock formations, and unspoilt beaches. The Kiama Coast Walk has three sections, made up of a series of shorter walks/shared paths from the mouth of the Minnamurra River south, through Kiama to Gerringong’s Werri Beach. Offering a mix of sealed paths, grassed tracks and beach walking, the hills are strenuous yet gentle enough for most fitness levels. Start Griffiths walking track at Barren Grounds picnic area and before you know it, you’ll be standing at Illawarra lookout taking in the spectacular views. Your journey then takes you through the diverse vegetation of Barren Grounds – heathland, woodland, rainforest. In spring, you’ll be treated to the vibrant display of wildflowers, and in winter, large yellow swamp banksias in bloom. On the heath, you're most likely to come across honeyeaters and southern emu wrens. And, if you're lucky, you might even spot a ground parrot or bristlebird. The walk continues across to the dramatic cliffs lining Kangaroo Valley, with view of the coastline beyond. Then, after a climb up to Saddleback Trig, it’s time to take a break, enjoy the surrounding views and a snack. From there, the track continues to one of the highlights of this walk, a lovely naturally formed stone bridge across Lamonds Creek. After crossing the bridge, continue along the trail back to Barren Grounds picnic area.

Kiama's glorious Saddleback Mountain offers a photographer's dream, with the elevated Saddleback Mountain Lookout. On a clear day, take in the breathtaking views from Cronulla in the north to Milton in the south. While the north-facing viewing platform (off main car park) is excellent, be sure to checkout the recently opened southern platform further up from the main car park. Located just 10 minutes from Kiama's Blowhole, Saddleback Mountain Lookout is one of the area's greatest natural attractions. HODDLES TRACK Heading west from the Saddleback Mountain Lookout, the walking track is marked by green posts and follows the ridge up the escarpment to Mount Noorinan. This track was originally used to transport produce to Kiama for shipping in the 1800s, and at one point continued west to Bowral through the remnant rainforest that stretched all the way to the coastline. Birdwatching is popular here - keep an eye out for crimson rosellas, eastern bristlebird, and the golden whistler. The track is steeply graded and becomes slippery at times, so sensible shoes are recommended. The track takes about two hours with a distance of seven kilometres for the return journey.

Take in the beautiful coastal views and read a series of interpretative signs that provide information about Indigenous occupation of Bass Point and Shellharbour City. The Walk tells a story of the way Indigenous people connected with the land, movement patterns, diet, resources and tools. In the past the Wodi Wodi tribe had a 'walkabout area' between Picton, Stanwell Tops, Marulan and Nowra and would camp at Bass Point. Today Bass Point is entered on the Register of the Australian Heritage Commission and is recognised as one of the two most important archaeological sites on the NSW coast.

Hill 60 Lookout located at Port Kembla is reached via a narrow but well formed established walking track and offers spectacular views up and down the coast line. A series of post and rail guards can be found at this interesting and spectacular spot. Just below the lookout are beaches fished commercially by local Aboriginal fishermen up until the 1940s. The area has numerous Aboriginal shell middens and artefacts scattered along its shores. Deep beneath the lookout lies a series of fortifications, established at the beginning of World War II. These fortifications housed large guns which were put in place to protect the vital industrial centre of Port Kembla. Although there are no longer any large guns here the concrete bunkers can be clearly seen. These bunkers are connected to a series of underground tunnels which honeycomb the entire area. These tunnels are not accessible to the public.
