You can walk through the Botanical Gardens to the city or visit this large area as a destination for a walk, jog or picnic. There are many restful areas with fern areas and a camellia walk, etc. The Rose Gardens are glorious from October to April when the roses are in full bloom and the Picnic Cafe offers a great place to have lunch or a coffee and breathe in the scented air.

Parliament buildings are worth a visit, there are weekday tours available and the grounds are pleasant to rest and reflect in. The iconic "Beehive" is a must see in Wellington.
