What's Up Miami

Neighborhoods

Here are the most emblematic neighborhoods that make Miami what it is, and what I love about this Magic City. It’s organic, a melting pot of diversity, a multi cultural hub, a city, beach town, metropolitan, Cosmopolite, home grown, get down, grass roots, glam, slam, jam of a city. Find your bliss here.
Historic, filled with shops and eateries, on the water, CG is one of the iconic neighborhoods in Miami you will not want to miss. Main street is the beat, but wonder off into the neighborhoods for a blast from the past. Saturday’s is their hippie Glasser Farms market not to be missed.

Quaint old Miami of coral walls and giant banyan trees. Ponce de Leon was most certainly here and those fountains are of youth :). Visit the Biltmore Hotel and enjoy stepping back in time.

Filled with buildings you have to walk this to really find things. It is not a city like NY, Chicago, LA. It is asleep when the offices and shops closed. Few used to live here, but it is changing fast. Vibrant museums, new skyscrapers and waterfront views. They offer Yoga at the bay front. Take the metro mover just for a quick ride around and then cross over to Bayside

A bit further north from Sunny Isles you’ll find a different fauna. Snowbirds flock here from Canada. Quiet beaches and bustling boardwalk to drink and people watch. There is a bandshell at the southern edge to enjoy live music on weekends.

A small key located between Brickell and Coconut Grove accessed by causeway and a toll. A great biking, jogging , kayaking, picnic spot. Several beaches on Cranston Park as well as Bill Baggs at the tip of the key where out only Miami light house stands. Over the past 5 years Midtown has absolutely boomed. Literally when I arrived back to Miami in 2007 this place was not even on the map. Now, it is all about crowds and throngs come out to do their shopping, dining, people watching, there are yoga studios, hair/nail salons, Target, Marshalls, furniture stores, tapas, kiosks, the list goes on and I didn't even get to the awesome restaurants (see individual listings) or the Art Miami Basel Week where they hitch up tents and Miami goes ballistic over all things artistic. So basically you have no need to venture farther for all things cool or bargain or trending, it is all here in Midtown, but you will want to keep heading south to Wynwood.

This place is also an iconic spot in Wynwood. It set up shop here in 2009 I want to say and features hot DJs of the moment in electronica. Outdoor handing out in the back, deep space to throw your hands in the air and dance your Molly off.

🚶🏽‍♀️Walking distance🚶🏽‍♂️ It's a Hotel, it's a cool pool bar, it's a great hang out and the best revival of any MiMo architectural wonder you will see along the corridor. Kudos to the audacious woman who bet on it when she bought it from slumber and frankly wins in my book. Pool table in the small building for intimate drinks.

Miami's beautiful performance center for concerts, ballet, opera, comedy, kids shows, you name it. They have valet that runs impeccably. There is a coffee shop for a quick bite or dine at the restaurant which used to be Barton G now Brava! You are literally 10 minutes away from a great show, so you could even Uber it.

Ok, so it is across the bridge in Miami Beach, but take the 79 street causeway and take a right... so close. It is our pride and joy and a wonderful venue for cutting-edge performances and a variety of free and excellent activities. Must see the venue and the outdoor park area as well as the rooftop to fully enjoy what Michael Tilson Thomas has conjured up here.

My recommendations are basically based on my personal experience and relationship with these places. So it is natural I would include the Grand Ole Olympia. This ole gal, I used to serve on the Board of this Scenic theater and historic for Miami. It is the home of the Miami Intl Film Festival, where I also served time and survived (happens in March if you are around). Must visit here for the place itself but also for the performances.
