Snorkle spot! Makena/Ahihi Bay- This is our favorite spot. Drive south on S. Kihei Rd, past Wailea to Makena State Park. There will be an area on the right where people are swimming in a small cove next to road. Drive past that and park in the public parking about 500 feet past the snorkeling. Get there as early as possible because of the visibility. By about 11:00 am the visibility starts to deteriorate. It’s still clear but it starts getting windy and stirs up the sand a bit.

this snorkel spot is the closest to the resort that  we enjoy. Turn left out of resort, drive a couple miles. When S. Kihei Rd makes a hard left (about where you see the stone wall on the left that says Wailea) go straight instead of going to the left. Follow that, which is still S. Kihei rd, to the end, about ½ mile. At the end to the right is free public parking. It fills up before 10:00 am. Walk to the beach, heading south for a few rock out-croppings and a cluster of small trees. You want to be at Ulua beach. There’s a big resort just above the beach. The snorkeling around the  rocks is amazing. Get there early before the trade winds start blowing.

Head North on S. Kihei Rd Hwy 30 to Kaanapali. Get off at Kaanapali Pkwy. Go all the way to the end and park in the parking structure at the Sheraton. It will cost to park but well worth a day there. Walk through the Sheraton out to the beach. There are outdoor bars with  pretty decent food and alcohol. The swimming and snorkeling are fabulous. People jump off of black rock into the water. The further you swim around black rock the  better the snorkeling.

This is the island volcano and is much colder than the beach (10000 ft above sea level), so take a sweater. You can actually hike down into the crater and there are parking areas designated along the way up. Go to the top first to see the magnificent view. It’s a fairly easy hike into and out of the crater but bring tennis shoes at the very least. The weather changes quickly up there so if rain is in the forecast anywhere on the island, you can bet it will rain on the volcano.

This is a fun place to stop on your way down off Haleakala after the wineries. If you do buy wine at a winery, you can drink it at the Surfing Goat Farm with some fabulous cheeses you can purchase at goat farm.

This is on the exact opposite side of the island as the resort. It is an all day excursion but the waterfalls are worth the road trip. Head back to the other side of the island as if you are going to the airport in Kahului. Stop at the Shell gas station before you head onto Hana Hwy and buy the CD for the road to Hana. Take the time to do everything that the CD says to do. The CD tells you some history and takes you off the beaten path to little villages that you wouldn’t know about otherwise. If you make the drive all the way to the end of the CD and find yourself in the ocean side of Haleakala National Park, check out the Seven water falls. We have found that by the time you make the entire road trip to Hana and have stopped at all the other waterfalls and side trips, it is late in the afternoon and you’re fairly tired of driving. Stop anyway and check out the lower two or three waterfalls. If you are so inclined, the upper falls require you to hike a couple of miles. Makes for a long day, though, and you still have to drive back to the resort. You are supposed to go back out the way you came on the Hana Hwy. However, you can drive all the way around but you will be in “up-country” on the road to Haleakala because the road does not wrap around back to Kihei. The views of the Big Island are spectacular on this route. If you drive back out the way you came, stop at Mama’s fish house for dinner (reservations are a must, no dress code, fabulous food but expensive).

This is a cute town, very boho . Great place to watch wind surfers. Park in public parking as you come into town. Walk across street to big park/beach. Gets windy but that’s why its good for the wind surfers. The waves can be a bit rough for boogie-boarding, no good for snorkeling. Stop in Paia for a cup of coffee and some munchies before the long day on the road to Hana.

The best way to get a meal here without reservations is to show up exactly as they are opening and ask to be seated in the bar. Otherwise, make reservations FAR IN ADVANCE, there is no dress code. Expensive but the best fish on the island.

Just past Kihei Caffe in the shopping center before the Foodland grocery and Sansei suhi. The locals hang here, happy hour is reasonable. There are other estaurants and pubs in this same shopping center, all very good, friendly.
