Sightseeing: Churches and Free Entry

Although this is not the cathedral of Bologna, it is definitely the most prominent church. Make sure you see the enormous meridian line on the floor, the pendulum that tracks the movement of the earth, and the frescoes in the chapel of the magi, which inspired Dante in his writing of his Divine Comedy.

The beautiful walk to San Luca under the longest covered walkway in the world is well worth it! The views on a clear day can't be beat. Wear good walking shoes and be prepared for stairs. You'll need about 2 - 3 hours.

This 13th century building has been a meeting point in Bologna for centuries. Be sure to visit the 'whispering gallery' and look for the wooden supports on the ceiling where public hangings were carried out on market days in the distant past.

The incredible 16th-century fountain has been recently restored. Those 'in the know' know that Neptune was sculpted so that when viewed from a certain angle, the viewer sees what seems to be the sea god's rather large, erect penis!

The Views!! Although this church itself is worth a visit, I recommend you take the short walk out of the historic center and up the hill to San Michele in Bosco for the beautiful panoramic view of the city.

The original seat of the University of Bologna, this building contains the 'anatomical theater' where medical students in the 14th and 15th centuries studied human cadavers. The walls are covered by family crests of students from centuries past.

While this museum itself is worth a visit, I've added it because they have a special exhibit on the paintings of Pompeii and Herculaneum that is absolutely worth a visit. This special exhibition (I Pittori di Pompeii) runs until March 19, 2023.

As a former music teacher and musician, I (Justin) really appreciate this place. You can see incredibly rare, strange instruments for antiquity as well as an incredible collection of rare, original sheet music.
