Across the road from us, good cafe with lots of shaded tables in the park, listen to the surf. Dogs are allowed on the beach till 9am, arrive at 9am and meet families with their pets at the cafe.

Our favourite. Highly recumbent their pizza - definitely eat in rather than take it away, enjoy the ambience, do check out the garden area out the back. No bookings, very busy mid summer.

Large marina, worth a look around, can see as drive into Whangamata from the north. Adjacent estuary has a very child friendly beach, jetty, boat ramp,large reserves, jet skiing around upper reaches.

Part of the Coromandel, superb relatively safe white sand surf beach, no rocks, surf patrol, excellent town centre shopping, bush walks, great base for day trips around the region. Very relaxed town.

Get away from it all, 10 minutes drive from our place, walk 15 minutes from the carpark through a sandy pine forest, opens onto an expansive white sand surf beach with estuary and bird sanctuary.

5 minute drive. Very scenic beach, drive through and to top of hill on right, park, follow a very very scenic track for 45 minutes (up and down but reasonably easy)

40 minute drive. Holiday town for Aucklanders, large harbour and surf beach with general store and golf course. Not a tourist destination but an excellent restaurant.

1 hour drive. Not much here but a beautiful beach, estuary for picnics, and one of the best restaurants in the Coromandel. Can take a two minute ferry ride here from Whitianga, then a half hour walk.

1 hour scenic drive. Fun at low tide digging own hot pools to play in. Surf extraordinarily dangerous so be very very wary. Parking can be challenging and may mean a long walk midsummer.
