Sightseeing

Trinidad is one of our favorite places to hang out and sight see! There are lots of great beaches to choose from, as well as restaurants, and places to hike. You can make Trinidad a full on day trip, use it as a pitstop for you other "northern" adventures in places like Big Lagoon, Prairie Creek State Park, or Redwood National Park. It's also probably the "best" last stop before Crescent City if you need gas, a supermarket or a convenient bathroom. The next small town is Orick, about 15-20 minutes north.
Trinidad Head is a short uphill hike to some spectacular views and potential whale watching. About -Hiking -Picnic -Whale watching Duration - Plan for 1 hour (or longer). The hike to the top took us about 20 minutes with a 6 year old who stopped a few times to rest. It was warm on the way up so we shed layers, but quickly put them back on at the top. We hung out up top for 30-40 minutes with some snacks, bincoulars and a telescope. It was pretty windy. What to bring... It can get windy up top so bring layers. In case of sun, pack sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle. If you like to whale watch or just check out the scenery, consider some binculars or a mini-telescope. There is a wooden bench up top. So if you plan to stay awhile a small cushion might also be in order. Before you go... - Make sure to lock your car - Use the bathroom - Check the weather

Food scene

Bring your OWN CUP! We love the Beachcomber Cafe for breakfast, brunch and coffee + treats. Seating is outdoors, picnic style under a covered awning. This is one of very few places around that caters to MOST food preferences, especially to anyone who needs GF/V/Vegetarian options.

The cover photo absolutely does NOT do this place justice! We recommend going early to beat the inevitable crowd AND so you can score a window seat overlooking Trinidad Bay. The menu here includes lots of options, including omelets, waffles, french toast, pancakes, and fried potatoes. For lunch and dinner they offer a variety of fish prepared to your taste. Not the world's "best" coffee (it actually might be Farmer Brothers, no espresso, etc.). So, get your cafecito in Arcata for the drive OR at the Beachcomber before or after your meal.

After a long day on the trail or at the beach, this tiny pizza parlor hits the spot. It has a great selection of traditional and gourmet pizza, local beer, and offers dine in or take out. Note: If this place is all full, check out the wood fired pizza place that shares space with the Beachcomber (only open weekends).

Murphy's Market makes a great "last stop" before heading to the beach, Prairie Creek State Park or Redwood National Park. It's got a fairly dynamic deli and keeps picnic and camping supplies in stock. On Sundays, they offer barbecue in the parking lot and in the summer, there is sometimes an arts and crafts market to the west side of the parking lot.

Conseils aux voyageurs

Se déplacer dans les environs

Local transport is a "different" animal

Technically, Lyft advertises rideshares, but they are only accessible when there are drivers - and this can be unpredictable! To visit Trinidad, we recommend renting a vehicle using a traditional car rental or something like Zipcar (there are multiple stations in Arcata). While there is an intercity bus operated by HTA that goes to Trinidad, we do not recommend it for all of the sites mentioned in this Guidebook.
