Neighborhoods

A romantic, festive and trendy district, the charm of the Marais lies in its cobblestone streets, historic spots and quirky boutiques. Straddling the Paris Centre arrondissement, this district with a village feel was built on marshland (‘marais’ in French), hence its name. Parisians and visitors alike love to come here for a leisurely stroll, as it is a great place to spend time and/or go shopping.

Situated in the east of Paris, the Oberkampf district is known for its young, cosmopolitan, and party atmosphere. The area is full of cafes, restaurants, concert halls and nightclubs, and the streets Oberkampf, Jean-Pierre Timbaud and Parmentier are especially lively at night. Not to miss, the retro atmosphere of Café Charbon (1863), the mythical Nouveau Casino concert hall, and the rooftop terrace of the Perchoir Ménilmontant with panoramic views over the rooftops of Paris. Rue Oberkampf is also thronged with unusual places to see like the Cité du Figuier, Cité Griset, Cité de l'Industrie and Cité Durmar. A little further on, the Atelier des Lumières programmes spectacular immersive exhibitions.

Just a few steps from the Louvre and Palais-Royal, the Rue Sainte-Anne is a mini-Japanese district. It leads from Rue Saint-Augustin to Avenue de l'Opéra. This lively street has a great choice of Japanese restaurants and so is an ideal place to enjoy noodle soup (Ramen) or gyozas (tasty little meat and vegetable raviolis), or udon. This is also a good place to pick up Japanese or Korean products in the street’s grocery stores and shops. You’ll also find several Korean restaurants here.

If you're looking for a "petit dejeuner royal"... it's a lovely café, in front of Place des Vosges... pastry and bread are delicious. It's pricey but worth it. There's another lovely Carette at Trocadero, with view on the Eiffel Tower
