The Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira (or simply the Auckland Museum) is one of New Zealand's most important museums and war memorials. Its collections concentrate on New Zealand history (and especially the history of the Auckland Region), natural history, and military history. The present museum building was constructed in the 1920s in the neo-classicist style, and sits on a grassed plinth (the remains of a dormant volcano) in the Auckland Domain, a large public park close to the Auckland CBD.

The Auckland Town Hall is a prominent civic landmark in the neo-Baroque style. Taking pride of place on Queen Street in Auckland’s CBD pokapū tāone, it is known both for its original and ongoing use for administrative functions for the Auckland Council as well as its famed Great Hall and Concert Chamber. The Auckland Town Hall has been at the centre of the city’s political and cultural life since its opening in 1911, and over the years has hosted countless significant events and figures. Attractive stained-glass windows, original kauri floors, ornate plasterwork, and spectacular chandeliers combine to make this a beautiful venue.

The perfect place to drop in and refuel. It’s chef Al Brown’s place and reflects perfectly his attitude towards food: in season, beautifully cooked, to be enjoyed with friends. Order a selection of small plates and pass them round. Try the freshly shucked oysters. Then there’s the wine list – small, but perfectly formed, with many of Al’s top picks. Park yourself up.

The Auckland central business district (CBD), also called the city centre by Auckland Council, is the geographical and economic heart of the Auckland metropolitan area. The area is made up of the city’s largest concentration of skyscrapers and businesses, which form an iconic skyline. The CBD is one of the most densely developed places in New Zealand, with many commercial and some residential developments packed into a space of only 433 hectares (1,070 acres). Bounded by several major motorways and by the harbour coastline in the north, it is surrounded further out by mostly suburban areas.
