The residential buildings in Russell Woods are among the finest examples of middle class, builder-designed residential architecture in the City of Detroit erected between 1920 and 1949.. Despite the decades of disinvestment in the city of Detroit, Russell Woods has always been supported by multi-generational homeowners and their love for a neighborly community. As the largest Historic District in Detroit, Russell Woods was home to many prominent residents, including The Supremes’ Diana Ross, Florence Ballard, and Mary Wilson; poet and publisher Dudley Randall; and composer Brazeal Dennard.

Food

Voted on of the best places to eat in Detroit by Eater Detroit. Only a 15 minute drive and totally worth the trip. Sweet potato ice cream, chicken and sweet potato waffles, sweet potato cookies and cornbread — Sweet Potato Sensations does it all, working hard to preserve the legacy of George Washington Carver. Headed to the Old Redford neighborhood bakery? Try the pie first. Etta Mae’s salmon croquettes, the Jive Turkey sandwich, and the black-eyed pea and collard green soup are tasty, too.

Jamaican Pot ~ 10 minutes Good things come in small packages, like the city’s best jerk chicken served up in a strip mall off Eight Mile. While the Jamaican Pot is exclusively carryout, expect to wait a bit while the busy kitchen carefully prepares each order of curry goat and pepper steak. The jerk chicken is made with flame grilled chicken that’s seasoned with a blend of island spices. To drink, cool down that heat with a bottle of Kola Champagne or keep that spice going with a ginger beer. Call ahead for faster pick-up or place an order online.

Eastern Market is called the “largest historic urban food market” and the “largest open-air flowerbed market” in the United States. Around the market area, warehouses offer over 100 specialty businesses focused on meat, fish, wine, coffee, and nuts, as well as an infamous hardware store and a few restaurants/bars. The best day to attend the market is Saturday, when it operates from 6:00 am until 4:00 pm, but it also offers a smaller number of vendors on other select days of the week such as Sundays and Tuesdays (check their website for hours and details). The Tuesday markets offer a health and wellness focus, whereas Sundays feature home goods (art and antiques).
