You'll have to walk over 1km to get to it but, it is a nice walk overlooking Muckross lake. Same walk for the Old Weir Bridge (see sightseeing). You can also have a soup and a sandwich here.

The Great Southern Hotel has been at the forefront of Killarney's tourism since it opened in 1854. It offers a great setting for both formal and informal dining: -Brownes Bar offers informal dining, a varied menu including vegetarian options. The food is generally quite good and changes often. Wonderful selection of whiskeys from around the world and alcohol-free cocktails. -The Killarney Wine Rooms in the basement offer a great wine tasting experience where you can try wines from some of the best vineyards around the world. -Although the Garden Room Restaurant is a beautiful space, I don't rate the food.

You're really right by the lake here. The surrounding scenery from this hotel is breathtaking, perfect for a drink on the terrace or a light snack in The Lounge or lobby from 11 a.m. My favourite dining option within the hotel, particularly in the summer months, is Riva on the ground level. Mediterranean food in an airy, light space (day, evening, and pizza menus) The Brasserie offers a varied menu. I've had mixed experiences (day and evening menus). I'm not especially taken by the food in the Panorama Restaurant.

There's a long history to this estate, perhaps a little less known than the Muckross Estate. Beautiful old house full of fine furnishings and grandeur. -The Herbert restaurant offers very good food and have recently been awarded 2 AA Rosettes in recognition of culinary excellence. The 5-course dinner menu is great. -The Cellar bar (in the old house cellar) also serves light bites and sandwiches. Good choice for afternoon tea too! (with prosecco if you like!)

An Old Sweet Shop-flour and agricultural store. Reidy's is a town's landmark listed in the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, full of character and history. You can have a coffee, a pint, a fancy cocktail and something to eat (food served until around 4:30 pm). You'll be surprised to find many different rooms inside including a big courtyard. Suitable for all. Music can start from 17h in the summer. Very busy. www.reidyskillarney.

From 2022 this restaurant is called 10 Bridge Street. A church from 1816 is the setting for this long-established restaurant; one of the first tapas bars in Kerry. The new name also introduces a new menu, but they promise to live up to their reputation with the same fantastic locally sourced food, great cooking techniques, and service. Located in Killorglin, a town about a 20min drive on the Ring of Kerry. Only Saturdays and bank holidays until the 26th of May.

Blarney Castle and gardens, home of the famous Blarney Stone, (approx. 1h30min from the cottage) 60 acres of beautifully diverse gardens and a castle from medieval times (the 1400s) where the stone is. Kissing the stone has been an Irish tradition for centuries, it is believed to give you the gift of eloquence or locally known as "the gift of the jab". There can be a long line for the Blarney stone. It can be quite scary and difficult to get into a position to actually kiss the stone so keep that in mind when planning your visit. You have to pay for admission but you can enjoy a whole day there. You can book online or pay at the door. There's a cafe in the state but I personally much prefer to bring a picnic, just always remember to leave no trace! www.blarneycastle.ie

Ross Castle is another treasure within the Killarney National Park. It dates from the 15century and sits by the edge of the lower lake - Lough Leane.-on Ross Island. Not far from town. You can take a guided tour of the part of the interior that has been recently restored, or can simply visit the grounds. If you fancy a walk you can follow one of the trails on the island. The Copper Mines trail – a peaceful 2km looped trail on paved paths. Mining activity in the area dates back over 4,500 years with activities ceasing in the mid 19th Century. Boat trips, the waterbus and kayaking are available from the shore of the lake here. -Killarney Lake Tours for a cruise/ waterbus and/ or a jaunting car trip.+353 (0)6466 32638 www.Killarneylaketours.ie -Outdoor Ireland www.outdoorireland.com

Markets- Flea, Crafts and Farmers

Full of character and atmosphere, this flea market in the old church in Milltown, has only just opened. Noelle ( yes! the same as the coffee shop in Killarney) plans to open Friday, Saturdays, and Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm. Worth checking it out on your way to Dingle if you're into quirky vintage items. Also, if you'd like to grab a coffee and listen to great music, perhaps even some live performers she plans to invite along. It's on the RIGHT-hand side coming from Killarney on the R563. (There's another church on the left).
