Food Scene

One of the most famous ice cream shops in SF - old school ice cream place. There is always a crowd outside, but don't worry, the line moves fast, just be sure to get a number from the ticket machine! Pro tip: You can sample as many flavors as you like before selecting your perfect combo!

A great sushi spot with a 100% sustainable menu! They can tell you how, when and where everything was caught, and why! Very San Francisco and also very delicious. Pro tip - they have a happy hour menu every day from 5-7pm with $5 options and $2 beer and sake!

Looking for a good California pizza? This is your spot! Super casual and they have a very limited menu that changes daily based on what's fresh. I recommend splitting a large salad (so good) and getting one of the pizzas with an egg on it! Fun fact: This was started by a guy who used to cut holes in weber grills and sell pizza on the street corner! You can see some of the original pizza hacker ovens on display.

Da best! Hipsters, Portugese pasties and cold brew coffee - who could ask for anything more? They also have a great selection of beans to bring home and an awesome brunch menu, think "chili avocado toast."

Super fancy tasty food and their own microbrews. Very small batch, like chili lime IPA and salted cucumber pils. They are also early adopters of the "no tipping" policy. Great for a fancy beer or cocktails and a five star dinner.

Drinks & Nightlife

The ultimate in LGBTQIA bar! Fun for everyone (over 21) this place has cheap beers, pool, a huge outdoor patio and a music venue. I once saw a girl group where the chorus of the song was the singers going into the audience to makeout with strangers. Just saying - if you love Tecates, pit bulls and non-gender specific fun times, go here. Or, just go here!

Kind of a dive, but in a good way. So named not for the music selection, but because the exterior of the building is made of rocks. The cocktails are better than you think! Pro tip - look for the precious gem stones all around the outside.

Parks & Nature

A short, but steep, walk from my place - Billy Goat Hill has AMAZING views of the city, and is never crowded with tourists. Just head up 30th and don't stop! There is also often a rope swing tied to a tree at the summit, but the neighbors often cut it down. I'm too scared to try, but you might be braver than me!

An awesome walk / run from the house! You can see Bernal from the living room and kitchen. Neighbors love to bring their dogs up there - the views are stunning and it's a pretty good walk. Not too steep, but definitely wear sneakers and bring a camera.

Essentials

A big, old, normal grocery store. If you know Safeways, this one is one of the weaker franchises, but it has everything you need. Bonus - it is open 24 hours! Watch out, late night grocery shopping!

An old school, no frills deli. Just dudes who cut meat. They have what they have and it's fresh and that is that. Amazing farm fresh eggs and zero pretentiousness. Just get some meat, man.

It's Whole Foods. A kinda far, but nice, walk. Also right on the J Muni line.

Kind of expensive, but fine. I prefer Safeway for staples and nicer market for snacks and bits, but in a pinch you can get some salami and an apple! Note: they do not sell cigarettes!

Getting Around

The J train is super duper close! Just head to 29th and Church, but be sure to have exact change. I recommend using the City Mapper app to gauge timing, as it is pretty consistent. Get on the train going to the right, or where the numbers go down, and it will take you all the way to the Embarcadero if you like! Note that this is a beautiful ride, but also very slow. So if time is not an issue, hop on the j!

BART is our underground train system - much faster than its counterpart MUNI. 24th Street is the closest, but not a great scene. Don't let that sway you! Just walk towards 29th and be pleasantly surprised as the neighborhood opens up.

Sightseeing

Best kept secret! Laidley Street has stunning views of the city, but also a block of the most amazing mansions ever. One of the mansions is in the style of a Picasso painting, one has golden eggs all around it and one is literally in the shape of an owl. Amazing and no one knows about it!

Shopping

The cutest of the cute - a little boutique with organic cotton wrap hoodies and necklaces shaped like tiny gold branches. Perfect for gift shopping for that trendy someone in your life. Or me. Pro tip - watch out for their sale bins!
