Sightseeing

Washington State Ferries depart from Anacortes, which is 45 minutes south. Many of the San Juan islands can be accessed via ferry. Lopez Island is great for bicycling, Friday Harbor for kayaking, wale watching tours, and arts & crafts. Orcas Island is a great day trip with that small town “off the mainland” feel.

Fragrance Lake is part of Larrabee State Park, which became Washington’s first state park after a 20-acre parcel of land was donated by the Larrabee family in 1915. The park now accounts for a third of the Chuckanut Recreation Area’s 8,000 acres of public land. The Fragrance Lake trailhead is on Chuckanut Drive, directly across from the main entrance to Larrabee State Park. You’ll find a small parking area to the left just past the ranger station, or, if space is available, there are a dozen parking spots on the east side of Chuckanut Drive. A Discover Pass is required in either lot. A pass kiosk, water and flush toilets are available in the park.

Lummi legend tells the story of the handsome young Kulshan, married to two wives: the beautiful but stormy Tahoma and the plain but kind Shuksan. Over the years, Shuksan’s gentle nature won the heart of Kulshan and drove Tahoma to jealous rage. She moved south, but finding herself separated from her family, she grew taller and taller in order to keep Kulshan within sight. Kulshan, or Koma Kulshan, meaning “snow-capped mountain with a wound at the tip” in Lummi, or “hunting place in the mountains” in Nooksack, was named Mount Baker by George Vancouver in honor of his third-in-command in 1792. Thanks to Forest Service roads and the Skyline Divide trail, you can personally witness the beauty t

Explore two small beaches for sea critters, fascinating Chuckanut sandstone formations and views out over Chuckanut Bay to the the San Juan Islands. A headland hike topped with cedars and twisted madronas offers views of both beaches from a high perspective. This is a fine all-season hike for a bit of seclusion in the winter months.

The gem of the Interurban Trail is Arroyo Park. Trails follow a beautiful creek under a dense forest canopy. In the fall, salmon can be seen spawning in the creek. Great for walks or just sitting along the creek. Cross the bridge and hike one of the many trails leading into the Chuckanut Mountains. There are two parking areas along Old Sammish Road near Chuckanut Drive.

The rewards for this strenuous hike are a bouquet of fall colors and a vast panorama of North Cascades mountains. From the trailhead, the route up Church Mountain starts deceptively easy with a 0.5-mile stroll up an old forest road. Then it gets right down to business with lots of switchbacks winding up and around the west side of the mountain. The trees are fairly dense, which you'll actually appreciate on warmer days, though they obstruct any big views until later—look for the occasional peek of Mount Baker above or the North Fork Nooksack River below as you continue to climb.

Western Washington University and Fairhaven College in Bellingham. Established as an arboretum in 1967, Sehome Hill was protected from logging officially by members of Western's College Board of Trustees in May 1969. At first just 38 acres were protected, but then in 1974, that was expanded to 100 acre, and now visitors from all over can enjoy this gorgeous green space. Complete with overlook tower, informative trail signs, and an outdoor sculpture collection that is an excellent addition to any excursion to the Arboretum.
