Food Scene

We absolutely LOVE this place! What a find! From the moment you drive up to this charming renovated farmhouse you are completely captivated. When we first went to the Bitehouse for dinner we could hear the lovely strains of Jazz coming from inside and once entered were immediately enveloped in an enticing atmosphere complete with candlelight, soft music, heavenly aromas from the open kitchen where the chef was preparing our meals for the evening. You will have to book way in advance as they only seat 12 for the entire evening and are only open on weekends. www.thebitehouse.com ***currently closed - check their website for special events happening in the area.

Parks & Nature

I love Louisbourg - it's a wonderful way to spend a day and is only 1.5 hours away. This is a great place for anyone, groups and kids alike. A recreated french fortress from the 1600's with the staff in full costume and character - they fire the cannons on a daily basis and bake bread in their bakery in a real fire fed stone oven. **eat at the first class restaurant inside the fortress - an Inn that serves a three course meal for $25 pp which includes a soup as a starter, choice of main and dessert. The food is locally sourced and is what you would expect from the period and it is all served in the same dishes from that time. So much fun!

Our local Lions Club operate a boat from the Baddeck public wharf which will take you to Kidston Island in the summer (by donation) otherwise Baddeck Marine offer a water taxi service. There are walking trails, beaches and a Birdseye view of the Baddeck skyline. There are over 5 eagles nests on the island! There are also public washrooms and changing rooms as well as a lifeguard on duty during the summer. (The boat won’t be operated this summer 2020 - you are welcome to hire a water taxi from Baddeck marine to get across or canoe or kayak across from the adventure centre)

A very challenging hike - not for the weak or whiny! It takes 1/2 hour or so to get to the bottom as it’s such a steep descent, but the way out takes hours - brutal. It’s actually worth it, though, once you are there it is like a scene out of ‘The Beach’…a river flowing through the mountain to the Atlantic Ocean with a beautiful beach and no one else around…

Plan a full day to do the whole trail or do it in two days to maximize views….Baddeck to Ingonish and back or Baddeck to the skyline trail and back. I like to start towards Ingonish early in the day and stop at Cape Smokey day park for some photos, keep going to Ingonish- park at the back Celtic Lodge parking lot and do some of the Middle head hike. The Main Street cafe in Ingonish or the Celtic lodge is great for lunch. Macintosh Brook is a nice stop, Mary Ann Falls, Beulach Ban Falls, Franey Trail for a hike…The Bog, The skyline trail, then finally end in Cheticamp for the most beautiful sunsets. la Brie Cafe in Cheticamp is amazing along with their Marguerite Boutique- a fun, eclectic shop with something for everyone! I like to drive across to Cheticamp island and enjoy the view of the town from across the water as well as see the cows roaming freely… If you can make it to Margaree harbour for sunset it’s simply sublime…
