Parks & Nature

This is a great spot to catch the sunset and only a couple minutes drive from the Cottage. A beautiful pebble beach, loaded with driftwood and often with a colony of seals hanging out in the kelp beds in front.

Sandcut beach is a 20 minute drive from the cottage and offers a quick 10 minute hike through the forest down to the beach. The trail has boardwalk and beaches and is a little steep in parts as you make your way down to the coast. A beautiful pebble beach with awesome views of the Olympic Mountains. This place is most well know for it's modest waterfalls you will find spilling onto the pebbles if you head left once you get to the water. (about a 10 minute walk)

Very accessible beach only 15 minutes drive from the cottage. A few hundred metres from the parking lot on a paved walkway and you are there. There are picnic tables and lawns close to the water so a great place for a picnic.

25 minute drive from the cottage and you will find yourself in Jordan River which is a community in transition. Once settled as a logging camp it is now home mostly to people who want to live near the surf that is offered. It is a busy scene when the waves are in and a still a stunning and peaceful spot when there are not. The Cold Shoulder cafe is located here and they offer excellent coffee, treats and hot lunch items.

30 minutes from the cottage you will find China beach, there is a camping parking lot but you will want to continue further another 700 metres and you will see the 'day use' lot. From the parking lot it is a 20 minute hike on a well maintained trail with some steeper steps at the end. The beach is wide and sandy, in my opinion best at low tide. Another fantastic spot to catch a west coast sunset. Truly on of the most accessible spectacular beaches in the area, I highly recommend a visit here.

The trailhead to Mystic is 30 minute drive from the cottage leaving from the same car park as China Beach. You will head to your right instead of your left. The hike is about 45 minutes each way through dense forest and can be muddy in the rainy season. There are tree roots to contend with but the elevation change is gentle. There is a suspension bridge and a log staircase at the end of trail. The beach is stunning and sandy. There are cliffs with a waterfall pouring over them and classic west coast rugged beauty in every direction you look. This is a popular hike for locals with dogs and they are often off leash enjoying the hike as well. I think of this place as a crown jewel of the area.

If you are looking for a chance to stretch your legs the Whiffin Spit trail is a local favourite. A 15 minute drive from the cottage towards Sooke, continue on Whiffin Spit road until the end and you will find the parking lot for the trail. A unique walk that takes you out into the Sooke Harbour offers pretty views on the Sooke Basin and East Sooke. Very popular with dog walkers and photographers in the area. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the trail one way. A good trail for spotting seabirds and sea lions.
