Shopping

Service with a smile and bomb cotton candy. Decided to browse here after dinner and saw that they had cotton candy. since it is prepared ala minute, it took several minutes to warm up the machine but Erika was so gracious--I really enjoyed chatting with her. it is uncommon to meet workers who enjoy their jobs especially in the retail sector. I was glad to be able to get the cotton candy and will definitely be back to buy more. If for no other reason than nostalgia. If only they did homemade taffy!

Drinks & Nightlife

I guess since I come here a couple times a month, a five-star rating is called for. the food is consistently. Good and the entertainment is pleasant. with a duet and dancer. Emiri, the Sunday evening dancer is friendly, taking requests and interacting with the diners between songs. Oceanside dining is also an uncommon but relaxing experience.

Great little hole-in-the-wall karaoke bar. As others have pointed out the staff is very friendly. The Karaoke selection is huge and they most have a geek, you can even search for songs on their Website which is useful if you have a smartphone while at the bar. The screen also shows where your song is the queue. Definitely a hidden Waikiki gem.

Food Scene

How could I not give five stars since I have been here like weekly for the last month. Lots of flavors and the staff is friendly especially Mickie. The main difference between this and Hawaiian shave ice is that the flavor is frozen right into the ice rather than being added later, so the finished product is much fluffier. If you have an aversion to things that seem like fish eggs, avoid the toppings.

Have been eating and drinking at Da Smoke House for about three years. The food is consistently good and the service is always great.. The bar is definitely a neighborhood joint, many of the customers live in the condominiums adjacent to the property. Having the loyal customer base, really gives the place a friendly vibe. It is common for the regulars to offer hugs to each other, almost as you would when entering a private home. The bar owners, Shirley and Danny are at the bar most days which augments the homely vibe. On holidays someone will usually arrange a potluck picnic away from the bar, to further the camaraderie between customers and staff. Visitors are also made welcome, with none of the high-pressure tactics present in some of the tourist-trip establishments. Since it is a small establishment, usually with one cook and one bartender, during peak times they sometimes fall a little behind causing delays Another consequence of the smallness is the limited menu, for example the only appetizer available is cut-up sausage and they do not offer any fish or seafood entrees. My favorite entree is the steak sandwich with home-style (skin on) fries. The steak is sliced thin and is never over-cooked. Since other reviewers have named their favorites among the staff, I will keep that tradition. I originally visited Da Smoke House during the day and became acquainted with Danielle, I found her to be very gracious and always easy to talk to. Since the bar is slower on day-side having conversation made visiting most enjoyable. Since I changed jobs I now work days so I am only at Da Smoke House in the evening. Summer is an awesome Karaoke hostess, she even went out of her way to learn what my favorite song was and purchased the CD-G with it. She is also more flexible compared to other Karaoke hosts at other establishments, to this day I have not looked up a song's number or submitted my request in writing as some places require. Summer takes care of my requests, just the same. All and all I am fortunate to know Da Smoke House and am glad to write a very favorable review.

Everything Else

Great school. I was in and out of college for 16 years before enrolling at UHM full-time in 2006. By Summer 2008 I had my bachelor's degree. Like all big schools it is easy to get lost in the shuffle. When I needed help I found professors, advisers, administrators and instructors bent over backwards to make sure that my progress was as smooth as could be. The financial aid office was also extremely helpful. There is a lot of paperwork and it may seem daunting but once everything is in order it is awesome to see bills getting paid so I could focus on school, I did work full-time in the Summer to help with expenses, though. As other reviewers have commented, there is an unpublicized bar on campus. I guess finding out about it and then telling friends is one of those cute little traditions that makes UHM seem less like a big-generic metropolis and more like an ivy-covered liberal arts college. There is also a secret garden. Another under-publicized gem is the all-you-can-eat buffet in Hale Aloha Dorm. Lunch is about $8 and dinner is about $12 for the price, the food is excellent and I still eat there 1-2 times per week. As for the negatives, the campus is somewhat rundown and although I never lived on campus, I have heard that the dorms left a lot to be desired. But the flip side of that is that UHM's out-of-state cost-of-attendance is actually cheaper than California's In-state cost-of-attendance. Believe me someone has to pay to maintain UCLA's Olympic quality facilities--personally I'd rather have more modest facilities and lower cost-of-attendance.
