This volcano erupted some 15 to 20 million years ago. It formed in response to the initiation of the San Adreas Fault. You can walk into an abandoned rock quarry and stand in what would have been a lava filled vent, or throat, of the now extinct volcano. The towering hexagonal colums were formed as molten rock cooled, and they are beautiful to see and photograph.
