Kendal’s oldest inhabited building, now a fine dining restaurant run by Kendal College. It’s the best food at a lower price than you’d normally pay for something this upmarket. You can have a free tour of the building too. It’s 10-15minutes walk away but there are plenty of pubs to break up the journey, like Mason’s Arms! Walk down Stramongate and cross over the river. It’s on Wildman Street. LA9 6EN.

If you have children you absolutely must go to this! My childhood holidays to the Lake District always featured a visit here...I would run through the museum to find Mrs Tiggy Winkle...it's one of my best memories from my childhood, I was so happy! There's also the Old Laundry Theatre here too, which has recently been playing the World of Beatrix Potter Musical - also great for kids as well as adults.

Parks & Nature

Kendal Castle has fantastic views of the town and a great history. It was Catherine Parr’s (one of Henry VIII’s wives) family home. It’s now a ruin so it’s free to visit. Turn right, then left at the Chinese restaurant and walk through Abbot Hall Park. Go over the footbridge over the river and turn right but then immediately left up Parr Street. The climb to the Castle is at the end of the road.

Scout Scar: where Kendalians go to run and walk the dog. It’s a short drive to the main car park on Underbarrow Road, which will have you at the ‘mushroom’ viewpoint after about half a mile’s walk, or you can walk up from a layby by the old racecourse field on Brigsteer Road. You can also get to Cunswick Scar too.

There's a park behind the Brewery Arts Centre, which is useful if you're visiting with a dog. Go up the steps at the back of the Brewery Arts Centre and through the fire-escape type door. Cross the alleyway and go up the steps - the park is at the top with some great views over Kendal. Frequented by lots of dogs. It's also a great place to take a ball and have a kick about as it's quite enclosed so little chance of a ball reaching the road. Note the door back to the Brewery is closed after dark so you have to go back via Captain French Lane.
