Unlike a lot of "outlet towns", Freeport still feels like a small, historic village filled with beautiful architecture. LL Bean is a must, for both local and tourist, and is open 24/7, year round. Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream is right next to the main LL Bean building. Check out the McDonald's that looks like anything but, because it's a beautiful former home. Lunch at the Muddy Rudder a few miles south of town on route 1 - lovely water views and decent food.

Hills Beach is a small, hidden gem located on the other side of the beautiful campus of the University of New England, in Biddeford - one town south of Saco. Park your car for free - there are limited spaces parallel to the road directly across from Bufflehead's restaurant, with walkways nearby leading to the beach. In low tide you can actually walk across the sand bar to what is, in higher tides, an island. Drive slow through the campus to avoid possible speeding tickets.

Just 1.5 miles from the house, established in 1844 and situated on the banks of the Saco River, with sweeping views of same (at the rear), this is a large, beautifully maintained, highly recommended place for those seeking a quiet wander, bike ride, or jog amongst old, towering trees, tons of squirrels, birds, and lovely old headstones. In spring hundreds of daffodils bloom on a sloping field overlooking the water. Check out the small, lovely 1890 Queen Anne style stone chapel towards the front of the property that is still frequently used for weddings. There is also a walking trail leading down to the water.

Although this Audubon Sanctuary is relatively small at a mere 30 acres, it contains a short but spectacular trail along the perimeter of the point providing rare public access to this stretch of the Maine Coast, and views of the Gulf of Maine and Saco Bay. The trail passes by rocky cliffs and pebble beaches as it wraps around the tip of East Point at the very tip of Biddeford Pool. Along the way you will be serenaded by the sounds of waves crashing and birds calling. On the northern side of the trail, you will have unobstructed views of Wood Island Lighthouse, which has a fascinating history and is even said to be haunted. Please be mindful of the path and possible eroded embankments, especially if you choose to veer onto the rocks at your own risk. A less obvious hazard is poison ivy, which flourishes on the point. Parking is limited at the end of Lester B Orcutt Blvd along the shoulder with room for about 6 cars. The entrance is marked on the left as you face the water where there is a short right of way trail between and around private residences which takes you to the main sanctuary trail.
