Beaches, Wildlife Parks & Nature

Clifton Beach is made up of 4 coves and the beaches are called 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. When the summer south-easterly wind blows, the Clifton beaches are usually well sheltered from the wind. All of the beaches are accessible via stairs leading down from the road above. In summer, plan to get to the beach early as parking is very limited. Generally Clifton 4th is extremely busy in summer. Although it has public changing room and bathroom facilities, these are not always well-maintained. Vendors wander the beach, selling cool-drinks, snacks and ice-creams. Deck chairs and umbrellas are available for daily rental. Clifton 4th is a Blue Flag beach.

Camps Bay is a long sandy beach accessed directly from Victoria road. Sunsets can be spectacular. Again, parking in summer is very limited and you may need to park along one of the many side-roads. The road behind the beach is lined with street-side cafes, restaurants and a few small grocery stores making snacks and lunch easily at hand. Kiosks and vendors also operate from the beach. Deck chairs and umbrellas are available for daily rental.

Further along the coastline you will find the picturesque Llandudno beach – a beautiful beach and a favourite for sundowners. Once again, parking is extremely tight in peak season and the beach is reached by a winding pathway. The sandy beach is flanked by rocks on either end - leading to smaller coves for those wanting to explore. This beach is slightly more remote with no shops and poor bathroom facilities, but vendors do operate on the beach for snacks, drinks and ice-creams. Deck chairs and umbrellas are available for daily rental.

For the energetic, you may want to climb to the top. Platteklip Gorge route is well marked. It starts a few metres from the lower cableway station and on sunny days has spectacular views of the coastline. Don't underestimate the walk - There is very little shade & it is imperative to wear good walking shoes, take a windbreaker, plenty of water & snacks, etc. It's a steep 2 hour climbing hike up for those who are fit. From the top it's a short 10 minute walk to the upper cable station. Check the weather forecast before you set out and NOTE that all facilities at the top will be closed if the Cableway is not operating. For those less familiar with rigorous hikes, I would suggest the Lion's Head Hike.

Enjoy a memorable hike at Full Moon, or on any other day! It's is THE perfect short hike (approx 2-3 hours, with no special hiking equipment needed), and enjoy incredible views over Cape Town, Table Mountain, the Atlantic and Camps Bay. If you decide to walk when it is full moon, set off well before dark and do not forget a head-torch and warm jacket, water, snacks, etc. for the descent. For the less adventurous, look out for the trails of torches on the mountain around full moon evenings. www.hikingcapetown.co.za

Woolworths is my recommended stop for grocery shopping. It can be relied on for quality food purchases and although this is a very small branch, it should have stock of most of the basics that you require (no alcohol on sale in any Camps Bay supermarkets) and is usually less crowded than the Pick n Pay supermarket below it on street level. Parking can be tricky during peak season. Hout Bay has a larger Woolworths branch, which includes homeware, textiles and alcohol. Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 18 years, can be reached by boat, but it is not honestly something that I would recommend that you prioritze, if you are short of time, or don't have a particular interest in this aspect of South Africa's past. The boat ride can be challenging in strong winds and it can be a long day out for young children - The island is (for obvious reasons) very harsh / barren. I have heard several complaints that the bus does not stop in order to take photographs of the City (and Mountain) and that the guides can be difficult to understand.

Lunch in the fishing village of Kalk Bay makes for a divine day out! There's a hipster / indi sort of vibe – browse markets & quirky shops, relax with a cold beer or glass of wine and enjoy the holiday atmosphere whilst fishermen ply the waters.
