- If you buy beer or soft drink you will pay a recycling deposit on the bottles. There is a machine in the store where you insert the empty bottles. The machine will give you a voucher. You can redeem the voucher on your next grocery purchase or just ask for the cash at any register

Outdoor "Beach" Bar on the main canal in Alkmaar. This is a popup bar/cafe that only opens in summer. Great spot for a light snack and a cup of coffee (or a cold beer). They have sand toys for the kids too

Cafe/bar on the top level of a disused building. Nice urban feel, with occasional live music. Great view of the city too - see if you can spot all the major landmarks while you sip your drink

Great little lunch cafe that primarily exists to make sure our friends in the community with Down's Syndrome are able to develop their working skills. Go support this excellent project with the out-there name! (The food is good too)

One of the easiest beaches to get to from our house, Egmond aan Zee is part of the long stretch of coast on the Netherlands' west side. Golden sand and plenty of cafes built into the beach itself

As well as a long stretch of beach, Bergen aan Zee has a Sea Aquarium on the waterfront. Pricey but worth a look. The surrounding areas are knows for established dunes, used by hikers and joggers. Bergen proper is a lovely town with some great terraced restaurants and bars.

"The House With The Cannonball" marks the first shot fired by the Spanish during the Siege of Alkmaar in 1573.
The people of Alkmaar were able to fight off the invaders, first with fire (burning tar was poured from the city walls) and then with water when the dikes of Alkmaar were deliberately destroyed, flooding the Spanish army into retreat.
Hint: To find the cannonball, look up :-)
