This is a bit far afield, you might be thinking, but we recently ate there and it was SO creative and delicious - as well as locally sourced - that we thought it was worth a mention. Tramore is a fun place for a day out with the family with its beach and amusement park, and by car it's about 75 minutes' or so drive. Worth making a full day of it but not impossible!

A large dining room with some tables and some sofa / coffe table options. Nice for a relaxed meal, though service can be slow. Mount Wolseley is a nice spot to see, in any case, due to its beautifully manicured golf green.

Entertainment & Activities

It's hard to categorise Rathwood. It started as a garden shop at the edge of a farm and grew to a mini-shopping mall! There's a good self-serve cafe for lunch, some high-end shopping, and the Chocolate Factory which sometimes offers chocolate-making activities. Seasonally, Rathwood is well known for its Christmas and Easter trains - you need to book early - great for young children.

Small skateboard park in the town. Lots of shopping. The Courtown beach is just a few minutes past Gorey. About 40 minutes' drive so quite easy to do from Ballin Temple.

Artist Elizabeth Cope lives here, and at Halloween, Christmas and during the summer there are festivals and activities for all the family. It's on the way to Kilkenny.

Sightseeing

It's haunted - so say the family that have occupied this quaint little castle for many generations - since the 1600s. They give tours of the castle which offer some local history. They've opened lovely tea room too, very picturesque. Book for your tour. You can wander the gardens at your leisure without booking but they charge for entry.

This is a really well done heritage centre with buildings constructed in the methods of different eras. Great for a hands-on, interactive look at history, and it doesn't feel like you're learning. Good playground at the end of the tour, on the way up the hill to the Round Tower. Cafe-restaurant is reasonably good value. Otherwise, head to Wexford town 5 minutes further down the road.

Pub, not bar, buy anyhow, this is our "local", the nearest pub & grub spot, with fairly regular entertainment and a small shop for that emergency milk & bread!

Parks & Nature

Stunning gardens, pond and walk to the Slaney River. In summer there is a little cafe serving scones, tea, coffee - not really enough for lunch but a nice rest stop. The gardens were developed by Corona North but are now publicly managed, and FREE!

Challenging enough for the average adult, hard on little legs. Takes about 45 minutes at a decent walking pace to the top. Little legs can do it too as the path is wide and smooth, but be ready for some requests for a piggy-back. You go through Bunclody to get there. No facilities at the mountain itself but there's shopping and eating in Bunclody.

Local business. Not a cheap as the German chains Lidl and Aldi, but cheaper or on par than Tesco. They do free home delivery.
