Entertainment & Activities

One of the only places in the world where you can literally swim with penguins, Boulder Beach is a must see. (Its not an aquarium or a zoo but combines the delights of both in a completely natural setting!) Go early (it opens at 8am in summer), because the beach is small and fills up quickly. Swim among the huge granite boulders and kelp forests, and watch the penguins go about their business. Their nests are in the bush behind the beach, so they'll waddle out off the water up to their nests right next to you! Just don't try to touch them, and leave them alone - they are wild and don't want close contact with humans.

Take a boat trip out from Hout Bay harbor to Seal Island. There are thousands of seals there! Depending on your luck or the season, you might see whales, sharks or dolphins on the way.

Intimate beach with decent surf (beach and point break at times). There's a river that flows into the sea on the south side of the beach that provides lots of entertainment for kids.

Drinks & Nightlife

Wedged on the rocks between the railway line and the sea, where the waves crash into the wall of the outside bar area, the Brass Bell is a Cape Town institution. With live music on Saturday afternoons, and a good restaurant, its a great place to while away a lazy day and evening. There's a rock pool as well so bring your swimming gear if you're in the mood for splashing about!

Shopping

A great Saturday morning market with artisanal foods and arts and crafts. Housed in a warehouse in the fishing harbor of Hout Bay, you can make a day of it, as there are boat trips out to Seal Island from the harbor as well.
