Essentials

This is the closest supermarket to the house. It is slightly high-end, and prices reflect this. But they have just about anything that you will need while staying here.

I believe that they open at 10AM and stay open late. This is the closest convenience store and are good for basic food supplies, alcohol, and sundry items.

The local post office. If you need to just mail a letter, there is a mailbox if you go up the street to the end of Douglass, up the stairs to States street and make a right towards Castro. About half way down on the right side of the street, there is a mailbox.

Entertainment & Activities

This is one of the few theaters left in the United States that has not changed since the early 1900s. They mostly show art type movies, and you can get the schedule by going to: http://www.castrotheatre.com/p-list.html It is really beautiful inside and I would HIGHLY recommend going to see a show there while you are staying here!

Food Scene

The food and drinks are average, but this is the place to be seen in the Castro. Especially on a warm sunny day, it is great to sit outside and people watch. From January 1, 2018, they will be serving pot as it will be legal in California. Once in a while they currently give out free joints to promote their new offering!

This is a wonderful neighborhood sushi restaurant and happens to be one of the best in the city -- only a 5 minute walk from the house! Ask for Betty if she is there and order Omakase (meaning the chef selects what to serve you). This is also a good place for lunch (closed on a Tuesday), as they have inexpensive Bento Boxes for lunch that include soup and salad.

This is more of a coffee shop, but they have great lunch salads and a small outdoor area if the weather is nice. One of my favorite lunch spots.

If you like Szechuan Chinese food, you will enjoy Mama Ji's -- just know it is very spicy. Their Dim-Sum is OK, but best in the Castro. You will find much better Dim-Sum in the Richmond district along Geary. and the outer avenues.

Great French food (and amazing Fillet Mignon!). It gets booked up a long time in advance as it is not a large space.

Great for brunch! But WARNING: it gets very crowded on the weekends and unless you go early, you can wait for more than an hour to get a table.
