This is the centre for the local (extinct) volcanic region. In the Winter, it's skiing of all kinds; in the summer, it's walking, running, cycling (off road and downhill) and horse riding.

Medieval cliff-top village overlooking the river. Plenty of restaurants for lunch and a new car park being built as I write. Visit here then go to Pech Merle on the way back

With prehistoric cave paintings and limestone cave features, this is a less famous attraction than Lascaux. In my view, however, it's better because it's original and it's not as busy as Lascaux.

Another of the spectacular cliff top villages in the region. Buy some of the local sweet wine in the lovely shops; it goes perfectly with the foi gras, either gently warmed, or in pate form.

Nestling in the Cele valley, this beautiful medieval town is definitely worth a visit. After visiting the Musee Champollion (he first translated hieroglyphics into French) relax with a coffee outside.

Beautiful, stunning, wonderful. On wednesday evenings in summer, there's an outdoor bbq by the town walls, with excellent beer from the town's brewery and a farmers market. Buy, grill, eat, drink…

Pont Valentre, birthplace of Leon Gambetta, centre for the production of malbec wine. Lots to see and do in this capital of the Lot Department. A bit tatty around the edges, but the centre is OK.

A fine example of a town in Xantrie, sitting on the banks of the Dordogne. Note the lauzes roofing. Eat and drink at the restaurants on the quay and read about it's fascinating history.
