For those who pine for a sweep of sand and sea with a wild feel, locals' favorite Mesa Lane Beach is a perfect hideout. Just make sure you time your visit for low tide–at high tide, the shore all but disappears under the crashing surf. Visiting this beach also requires a hike down and back up a steep flight of steps, making this a popular spot for a thigh-burning beach workout. It also has the added bonus of making this beach less crowded than other Santa Barbara beaches. The beach lies at the end of a quiet residential street, where a bougainvillea-lined path and stairway leads down to the slim shoreline–look for the surfers carrying their boards down here when the swell picks up. Soaring sea cliffs provide great protection from the wind and make the beach feel secluded and more private than other stretches along Santa Barbara, but you won't find any amenities here, so make sure you plan accordingly. At low tide, you can also hike here from Arroyo Burro Beach Park (Hendry's Beach) around the point.

Super local beach spot with a lot of stairs. Parking can be difficult but worth the struggle.
This particular stretch of sand is a best kept secret of Santa Barbara locals. To access it, you have to walk down about one million stairs tucked in between some private homes at the end of Mesa Lane. (Remember: once you're down there, you'll have to walk back up them again.) It's perfectly public, and picturesque, once you get down there though. This beach is a popular spot for local surfers and sunbathers. Just be wary of high tide, when the beach almost completely disappears. Plenty of free parking in the neighborhood near the top of the stairs.

5 blocks walking at the end of Mesa Lane at Edgewater. A serene uncrowded beach with surfing, favored by locals. Check tide schedules before going.
