The Convict Lumber Yard was one of Newcastle's first settlement sites, signifying the birth of the city and the coal industry. In recognition of the history of this site it is now a park. Opposite the Great Western Hotel is an interpretation of the original lumber yard structures and signs outlining the development of the site. A fascinating insight into the beginnings of Australia.
