Every visitor should sample a Nashville meat 'n' three meal -- Arnold's is the best. Serves only lunch. Monday is Fried Chicken day, Friday's for fried fish or shrimp. Don't worry about the line out the door, it moves quickly and tables turn fast as well.

A Nashville institution, since 1945, Rotier's has served generations. There are always dinner-style specials; one of the few places with fried chicken gizzards on the menu, but order the cheeseburger on French Bread and the "off-the-menu" chocolate milkshake.

Chef Hal Holden-Bache turns out great dinners, night after night, and his Lockeland Table is often overlooked in lists of the city's finest eateries. His wood-fired pizzas are legendary, and the tiny place is always packed with East Nashville hipsters, young families and Westsiders who know a good thing's worth the drive.

Go for lunch and shake hands with Randy Rayburn. He is one of the handful of individuals who set the tone, blazed the trail and created the current Nashville restaurant "scene." Look around and you'll see business bigwigs, society matrons, Music Row execs (and maybe a star or two). The Lemon Artichoke soup, Midtown Caesar and Midtown Meatloaf are classics as are the Sunset Caesar and Voodoo Pasta from Rayburn's now closed Sunset Grill.

The Frist Center for the Visual Arts is housed in the former downtown post office, an architectural jewel on its own. Constructed in 1933-34, the building displays both classicism and Art Deco styles and was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Today, it is the city's finest home for visual arts -- although it has no permanent collection. Every six to eight weeks, it rotates new exhibitions, bringing in art from around the world. Great for kids, too.
