The gal who opened this place up has a gift! May have one of the best chocolate croissants in LA. And they have an assortment of really good coffee. Lines are long on weekends, but worth it.

New-American deliciousness, but done with lots of love and care. Try the sorrel pesto rice with feta. And the turmeric shot. And the valrona chocolate cooking. You can't really go wrong, but get there before 845am if you want to beat the super-long lines.

This is the dish to get: turmeric fish with rice, pickled daikon and dill. Nothing fancy here, but yummy and a little different than your typical pho place, though they do have pho here (the broth is cleaner/lighter than some places.)

Nice atmosphere (kinda classy but not too stuffy), low key. Thoughtful selection of wines, half off during happy hour (which I believe ends on the early side at 6pm). Sit around the square bar or on the patio.

Yummy oysters and other foodie stuff. Entrees can be a little heavy, but the oysters are delicious. A little pricey, but you deserve it.

Somehow tucked away and secret feeling even though it's adjacent to Intelligentsia, Cafe Stella manages to be upscale and low key at the same time. Think charming, romantic Euro patio vibes. Summer salad, steak and pomme frites, gnocchi are all delicious. High-end craft cocktails are next door at the more scene-y, but beautifully designed Bar Stella.

Breakfast and paddleboats. A mini-version of the much loved Square One restaurant is hiding in the cute little boathouse of glorious Echo Park Lake! Get the grits with tomato confit and bacon or the breakfast sandwich. Good coffee, juice and homemade lemonade. They have little tables overlooking the lake, or spread out a blanket and picnic while gazing at iconic fountains, palm trees, paddle boaters. (Paddle boats can be rented for $10 per adult/hr)

Old school Italian joint from the 50's. Jazz standards and great vibes. Not everything on the menu is awesome, but the penne and bolognese (make sure to order al dente) is rich and craveworthy, and they make a killer blue cheese wedge. Great spot for a martini and random revelry. Make sure to sit in the main room and request a booth. Diverse crowd!

Tiny organic juice/smoothie spot. It's a splurge but you feel like you could live till a hundred if you drank their elixirs every day. They guys put a lot of care into their product and they make all their own milks on site. Also, the shop smells so good, it's like free aromatherapy.

When you need homemade soup or skinny fries or a glass of wine in comfy chairs, Taix is your dependable friend. Unpretentious and relaxed. Live music and comedy on various nights in the lounge. Or sneak over to the restaurant side if you want a quieter evening. Usually no wait.

24-hours K-town chain! Get the silky soon tofu and if you're hungry, some bbq short ribs or thin sliced bulgogi. Comes with kimchi and all those yummy side dishes. Bright lights, not awesome (but not terrible atmostphere). Hits the spot.

Parks & Nature

Both scenic and challenging, ends in Griffith Observatory and amazing views of LA. Take the Fern Dell entrance, off Los Feliz Blvd. (type in Trails Cafe, the trailhead is across the way.) No parking after sunset, so if you planning on hiking out after dark, park on one of the streets south of the entrance and walk in.

Arts & Culture

Awesome museum, great permanently collection, inspiring building/grounds. Make sure to walk under the rock, check out the Richard Serra sculptures, and the amazing James Turrell installations Breathing Light and Light Reignfall (grab a time slot via their ipad sign-up, near the admissions window). There's also the Rain Room which is wildly popular.
