Food Scene

There's nowhere to sit here, but I hardly ever sit while I eat their baked goods since I've usually consumed them by the time I get home!

Who Dat?! This gem offers New Orleans cuisine and the decor will have you waiting for a second line to roll in between the tables at any moment. The food is delicious and authentic, and the location is very hip.

Parks & Nature

This park is bigger than it looks from any point within it. It is spacious and sprawling, right on the East River and under the RFK Bridge.

Essentials

Around here, we call it a "bodega". Their sandwiches are generous and inexpensive and the guys who run the place are basically my favorite neighbors. They're not rushing like the rest of us around here, but they will engage you while they make you wait!

Arts & Culture

This sculpture garden is right on the East River and filled with monumental pieces you can sit in, on, or under most of the time. It's a great place to take your kids or a date! There are events there all summer long, too.

If you're interested in Film & Television, this is a great place to spend an afternoon close to home. The Jim Henson Exhibition was outstanding, and I'm sure they put a great deal of care into whatever they're showing at any given time. Kaufman Studios is right across the street, and there is a cinema right there as well.

During the summertime, MoMA PS1 hosts a "Warm-Up" every Saturday, where there is music, lounging, drinking and arting! It's full of locals taking it easy, and is a great opportunity to check out the museum and having a reason to come up for air. PS1 is great year-round, though, and this offshoot takes bigger risks than its parent museum. Some of the most exciting pieces I've seen in NYC have been at PS1. You can count on seeing something decades old and something brand new along with everything in-between.

Self-subtitled: A place to show and tell, this venue is a great spot to see some local stand-up, variety shows and open mics, or to take an improv or dance class. Check out the books for sale, get a beer or a coffee and kick it, what doesn't this place do?

Getting Around

This is the end of the line, so you'll always get a seat, but it's still only 6 stops from Manhattan. Be at Central Park in 25 minutes!

Drinks & Nightlife

This Czech Beer Garden is the real deal. It's a true NYC classic. Around the holidays, there are markets here where you can shop for gifts. In the summer, it's a great place to kill an afternoon. Truly the home of day drinking.

Entertainment & Activities

You never know what you're going to get here, but you can be fairly certain it will be a good time. Okay, so I don't exactly agree with offering finger food (Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken) at a bowling alley (watch shows from the lanes- best view in the house!) but I have never been let down by this place, be it for a concert or a dance party. Just a $20 cab from my home, for you weekend warriors.

It's a little dingy, but at $12/hr/table, it's the best place around to practice your backspin. Besides, there's an odd charm to the tobacco-stained carpeting.
