Sightseeing
Cloudcroft itself is pretty much like a smaller Ruidoso, higher in the mountains. But the real enjoyment is the drive to get there. If you take a quick drive into the Lincoln National Forest, at around dusk, you start to see large herds of Elk on the side of the road. It is something to see, plus you can get out and take a little walk in the forest. Though be sure you are always prepared with water, snacks, and necessary equipment.

About a 45 minute drive, It really is something to see, the sand can be seen from right outside of Mescalero as you drive into Alamogordo. When the snow season isn't that great, taking snowboards to white sands is always a fun alternative. Especially if you like kite surfing.
