Great to just drive through lava fields and lookout at end- very scenic spot and drive. If you're lucky there's sometimes dolphin pods around sunrise here- do not try to swim with them. There is a hike along lava rock- out and back, I recommend just doing the first part maybe a mile to black and white lava rock beach area. Can go as far as two miles out but it's very rocky. Go early to avoid heat, bring water and sunscreen.

I love this hike. It is like being on another planet, walking across so much lava. Be sure to take water. It is out and back so you can turn around at anytime. Hoapili Trail to Hanamanioa Point. Sightsee along the way.... just incredible. All the way to the South end of Maui you may see monk seals laying on the beach. Please don't disturb them, they are protected. Keep your distance and enjoy from afar.

The end of the road past Makena. Walk the King's Highway (AKA Hoapili Trail) along the lava beds to see amazing coastline views.
