Melrose Public Library is a true local resource for people in Melrose. It also has a great story of how town citizens pulled together to create this resource for the community. It began as an idea, was approved and funded in 1871 by the town, and eventually outgrew its rented rooms. The core of the present building was funded by steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who granted $25,000 on the condition that the town provide land for the building and $2,500 every year to support and maintain the library. You can see a medallion with his portrait in the entry hall, as a sign that this is one of the "Carnegie libraries."
