Every September the Vaux Swifts (migrating birds) roost in the chimney of Chapman School in NW Portland. Each year hundreds of onlookers gather on the lawn of Chapman school, from about an hour before sunset to about a half hour after, to watch the Swifts gather, organize, perform aerial maneuvers, and finally funnel in a black fluttering cloud into the chimney to roost. Very unusual and fun - bring a picnic.

Neighborhood school and park. Great for playing tennis, kicking a ball around, throwing a frisbee, etc.
If you happen to visit in September, make sure to go to chapman school at sunset to watch the swifts settle in for the night in the chimney. A truly Portland experience!
If its late summer, head over before sunset w a picnic to watch tiny little birds swarm (swifts) into a funnel cloud as they settle into the schools chimney for the night. pretty amazing.
