This looks like a ruin from ancient Egypt but is the base of a giant wheel used to crush the rock to get the gold. It ran 24/7 in the gold rush and created a huge racket that could be heard across the goldfields. The wheel turned with water sourced from the Expedition Pass reservoir- or the Res as its now known. Or Castlemaine’s beach.
