Formerly a monastery and pilgrimage center, today the Forty Saints Monastery is a fairly popular tourist destination, though it is partly shattered from time and negligence. The ruins of this 6th century Byzantine monastery lie across from the bay where Lëkurësi Castle stands. Overlooking Saranda, this monastery is a significant object of history and tradition which closely link it to the story of the beautiful coastal city. In fact, this may be one of the only monuments of its kind in Albania and the Balkans. The monastery is located only a few kilometers from Saranda

The Monastery of 40 Saints was one of most important landmarks of the region. Built in the 6th century, the monastery gave the name to the city of Saranda, which in Greek (the ecclesiastical language of Orthodox Christian Albanians until the 19th century) means 40. The monastery was a large building complex with its own order. Although it survived the Ottoman era it was destroyed, like the Lekuresi castle on the opposite mountain, by allied bombings as the occupying Nazi's had turned it into a weapons base. The monastery now is in ruins, yet it offers some spectacular overviews and panoramas of the city, Corfu island and strait, the nearby Greek islets, Butrint lake and surrounding hills. To get there follow the road outside the city towards Gjashta, there go to the direction of Gjashta Mosque and then keep going up until you make it to the monastery. If you go by car be advised that the last part of the road to get there is not paved.

The Monastery of the 40 Saints is my top recommendation for things to do in Saranda Albania. Many miss the opportunity to visit this historic site and a beautiful vantage point. This monastery is a special place, it was built between the 4-6th century and houses 40 rooms within. It was dedicated to the 40 Martyrs of Sebaste who refused to give up their Christian faith during the early stages of the Roman empire in Armenia, so they were locked in the building to die. The monastery was in good condition up until 1944 when it was bombed by British soldiers who believed there was a German garrison hiding inside. Saranda got its name from the monastery as Saranda means 40 in Greek.
