You absolutely cannot leave the island without visiting the César Manrique foundation! César Manrique (1919-1992) was a multidisciplinary painter, sculptor, architect, and artist, he studied in Madrid and, after several years exhibiting all around the world, he moved to New York, the mecca of art in the 1960s. That same decade, he returned to Lanzarote to settle definitively on the island of his birth where he left an indelible mark. César Manrique Foundation is headquartered in a spectacular dwelling designed by César Manrique himself. This was his home for the 20 years running from 1968 to 1988. It is sited in the midst of a lava coulee formed during the violent eruptions that rocked the island between 1730 and 1736. This 3.000 square meter building engages in constant dialogue with the natural surroundings on its 30 000-square meter lot and beyond: here, volcano and architecture blend in mutual respect. The upper storey draws its inspiration from Lanzarote’s traditional architecture, enhanced with modern functional elements such as wide windows, large rooms, and overhead lighting. The lower storey is built around five natural volcanic bubbles interconnected by tunnels excavated in the lava. They constitute a surprisingly habitable setting and an exemplary intervention in a natural space. We recommend visiting also the "César Manrique House Museum" also known as "Palm grove House" in the little village in Haria. if you buy a joint ticket "César Manrique Foundation" (Tahíche) + "House Museum" (Haría) you can save a few € and you can use the tickets on different days.

The César Manrique Foundation is located in the studio-home that this artist once lived in. Discover how important this artist was in shaping Lanzarote as you see it today. Then maybe visit also other places influenced by Cesar Manrique: Mirador del Río viewpoint, Jameos de Agua & Cueva de Los Verdes (lava tube caves to discover and an auditorium), Cesar Manrique house in Haria (his stylish house and his artist studio).

The Fundacion has to be a must if visiting Lanzarote as Cesar Manrique is considered something of a God to islanders for the work he did to encourage tourism from around the world but at the same time making sure it remained unspoilt and kept its magic. Cesar Manrique gave up his house to be made into a museum and to display his art work, he moved to Haria to be near the rest of his family. Haria Cemetary would be his last resting place following a fatal car crash at the roundabout by his Tahiche house.
