Rome's history around Torrevieja. When the Carthaginians spread around the Mediterranean from their capital in present-day Tunisia, some ended up in this area. This was around 230 BC. They ruled the area for a while until Hannibal made his attack on Rome which went as it went. When the Romans finally crushed Carthage = Cartagena, they also occupied the area of present-day Torrevieja around 220 BC. The Romans ruled the area for almost 200 years and built a lot of infrastructure and settlements around the Spanish coast. No major Roman city existed at the site of Torrevieja but there is ample evidence that the great Roman road Via Augusta passed here. Via Augusta was the longest of all Roman roads on the Iberian Peninsula and stretched over 150 miles. The Romans were naturally interested in the salt lakes because salt was an important commodity. They built a port in, above all, present-day La Mata. Unfortunately, the effort required by archaeologists to unravel the full significance of Torrevieja during Roman times has not really been put in place.
