A unique example of the famous Ottoman architecht Mimar Sinan's work, this mosque was built as a part of a social complex where madrase, food house for the poor, and a caravanserai was included. It was named after Mother Queen "Valide Sultan" as she ordered the construction of the complex.

Osmanlı zamanında padişah annelerinin yaptırdığı camilere Valide Camileri denilmektedir. II.Selim’in hanımı, III.Murat’ın annesi Venedikli Nurbanu Valide Sultan tarafından Mimar Sinan’a yaptırılmıştır. Mimar Sinan’ın 94 yaşında yaptığı bu cami aynı zamanda kendisinin son eseridir.
