We love days out in Lisbon! We always travel in a big van as we are a large family and our top tip to avoid having to fight with inner city traffic is to always use the car park at the end of this description below - it is on the East of Lisbon in the modern Parque das Nacoes, not only is it the most beautiful car park in the world right on the water, it is a lovely 20 minutes walk up to Oriente Metro station. With a day pass on the metro for approximately 6 Euros you can visit all the sights of Lisbon (including taking the historic tram 28 all over the city). Tram 28 starts in Martim Moniz square (the side under the castle) and ends at Campo Ourique (Prazeres). Unless you are in Martin Moniz very early in the morning be prepared to queue - an alternative is to get on at the other end of the tram, we had a great day at the zoo, got an Uber to Campo Ourique (11 Euros for an XL car), easily got onto a tram and then rode back into the City for dinner! Lisbon-Viana trip takes about 4:30 hours by car or direct trains. Lisbon is recognised as an alpha-level global city because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. Lisbon is one of two Portuguese cities (alongside Porto) to be recognised as a global city. It is one of the major economic centres on the continent, with a growing financial sector and one of the largest container ports on Europe's Atlantic coast. The city is the 9th-most-visited city in Southern Europe, after Rome, Istanbul, Barcelona, Milan, Venice, Madrid, Florence and Athens, with 3,320,300 tourists in 2017. Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the world, and the second-oldest European capital city (after Athens), predating other modern European capitals by centuries. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by the Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city and since then it has been the political, economic and cultural center of Portugal.
