Haweswater is one of the most remote lakes in Lakeland, only accessible by vehicle from the east although walkers can approach over the High Street range. This is its main attraction. Haweswater is, in fact a reservoir, created in the 1930's and submerging the village of Mardale. In recent years it has been the only location in England where golden eagles breed although recently there has been doubt that this continues. At the head of the valley is a car park that allows walkers to access the High Street range. High Street itself was a high-level Roman road

30 min drive. Many wonderful hikes of various degrees of difficulty and distance, incredible views at the top of Windermere and Ambleside. Watersports also available!

If walking the C2C this is one of the highlights of the walk, as you reach Kidsty Pike the highest point on the walk you will see Haweswater 2000ft below you. You will walk along its western shore before heading over the fields to Shap. If staying at the bothy you can walk to Haweswater Reservoir over the fells or following the old construction road from the bothy - its about a 13 mile round trip so take a picnic. Follow the Swindale valley for a wild swim in the river to cool off and revive your feet.

Great walks around Haweswater (I would recommend parking in Burnbanks and following the western shoreline), and also above haweswater - spectacular views! There is a car park at the southern end of the reservoir, with marvellous walks up to Blea Water, Small water and High Street - the famous Roman road running high up on the fells between Brougham and Ambleside.
